A little about Fuzzy Jazz:
We're based in Wheatland, Wyoming and are always looking for folks who love to listen to, play, or sing old-time jazz.
We spent the last several decades in Laramie, Wyoming and had several years of great jams, made great friends, and played (and listened to) some great music.
But what is "old-time jazz"?
Old-time jazz falls under many names: Trad Jazz, New Orleans Jazz, Dixieland Jazz, Chicago Jazz, West Coast Jazz, Classic Jazz, or even...Pop. Most of the tunes are actually pop tunes from the 1910s-1930s...but many songs can be played in the same style. The music is still being composed by groups such as Tuba Skinny, and players like Tim Laughlin - so it isn't necessarily "old music."
Compared to "modern jazz" or "smooth jazz", the melodies are more obvious and the solos are frequently based on the melody (to varying degrees).
As a player is able to depart from printed music, this music really begins to come to life. While readers are welcome, it's always exciting to see folks become comfortable without the paper music, to concentrate on the sounds, harmonies, and fills.
The music is conversational, where one instrument makes a statement, and the others either answer back, retort, or agree - or simply fill around the melody, or add harmony. A strong rhythm section emphasizes the chord structures, adds shape and interest to the front line and holds everything together; but make no mistake about it - rhythm section players get in on the soloing fun too!
